AAPC's Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam tests medical coding proficiency for physician and non-physician provider services, including medical record review, provider encounter abstraction, CPT procedure coding, HCPCS Level II supply and procedure coding, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, compliance, regulatory requirements, reimbursement, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. AAPC's current CPC guidance, updated January 14, 2026, lists 100 multiple-choice questions, 17 areas of knowledge, one four-hour sitting, and a 70% passing threshold. Candidates can take the exam online at home with a live remote proctor or on a computer at a testing center. Approved code books include the current-year AMA CPT Professional Edition, current-year ICD-10-CM, and current-year HCPCS Level II; AAPC says current-year books are highly recommended, preceding-year/current-year combinations may be used, and only one copy of each book is allowed. Remote proctored candidates need a closed distraction-free room, reliable high-speed internet, a computer, and an external webcam positioned to show face, hands, keyboard, and the keyboard area.
