Praxis 5581 preparation should combine broad content review with social studies reasoning: evidence use, perspective taking, cause and effect, civic participation, historical interpretation, map reading, and economic analysis.
Use these ETS structure points to organize Social Studies study before moving into integrated source practice.
ETS lists Praxis 5581 as a computer-delivered selected-response exam.
The exam is 150 minutes.
The current ETS study companion lists 140 selected-response questions.
United States History is the largest category at 40 questions, or 29%.
Praxis 5581 has a different structure than the older Social Studies: Content Knowledge exam. Use the 5581 blueprint: U.S. history, world history, geography, civics, economics, and integrated skills.
U.S. History, World History, and Civics together account for 74% of the listed questions. Build a timeline-centered review that also covers constitutional principles, institutions, rights, participation, and comparative civic ideas.
ETS says 10-15% of questions integrate social studies skills. Practice using evidence, evaluating perspectives, identifying cause and effect, and explaining how people, groups, and institutions influence change.

Praxis Social Studies 5581 measures knowledge and competencies needed for beginning practice as a social studies teacher. ETS lists a computer-delivered exam of 150 minutes with 140 selected-response questions. The exam is aligned with National Standards for Social Studies Teachers and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies from the National Council for the Social Studies, and its development was informed by the C3 Framework, national history standards, national geography standards, and voluntary economics standards.
The current ETS study companion divides Praxis 5581 into five content categories: United States History at 40 questions, or 29%; World History at 31 questions, or 22%; Geography at 19 questions, or 13%; Civics at 32 questions, or 23%; and Economics at 18 questions, or 13%. ETS also states that approximately 10-15% of questions integrate social studies skills, including evaluating perspectives, determining causes and effects, understanding how people and institutions create change, and using evidence to analyze, conclude, and ask questions.
Track U.S. history, world history, geography, civics, and economics separately, then add a skills tag for evidence, perspective, causation, and change.
Give extra time to the 29% U.S. History area while reviewing eras, founding documents, reform movements, conflicts, civil rights, immigration, foreign policy, and economic development.
Use passages, maps, charts, graphs, tables, political cartoons, diagrams, and photographs so content recall is paired with interpretation.
Complete 140 selected-response questions in one timed block to test pacing across recall-heavy history and interpretation-heavy social studies skills.
Use the guide to self-serve, or talk to a coordinator if you need help mapping timelines, official requirements, or troubleshooting day-of logistics.
