A content and interpretation exam guide for the ETS selected-response section, three short essays, NCSS-aligned social studies domains, stimulus interpretation, and critical thinking.
Praxis 5086 preparation should combine content mastery with short-answer analysis: use social studies facts accurately, interpret source material, draw inferences, and place evidence in historical, geographic, political, and economic context.
Use these ETS structure points to organize Social Studies: Content and Interpretation study across both response modes.
ETS lists Praxis 5086 as a computer-delivered exam with selected-response and constructed-response questions.
The exam is 2 hours.
The current ETS study companion lists 90 selected-response questions and 3 short-answer essays.
The selected-response section is 75% of the score, and the three short essays together are 25%.
Part A rewards fast, accurate social studies content knowledge. Part B asks for short analytical responses that interpret stimulus material and connect evidence to historical, geographic, political, or economic context.
Selected-response questions cover U.S. history, world history, government and civics, economics, geography, and behavioral sciences. History and civics each carry 15%, but the essay prompts can draw across fields.
ETS says essay questions use materials such as maps, charts, quotations, passages, graphs, tables, cartoons, diagrams, and photographs. Practice concise responses that state a claim, interpret evidence, and place it in context.

Praxis Social Studies: Content and Interpretation 5086 assesses the knowledge and skills needed by a beginning secondary school social studies teacher. ETS lists a computer-delivered, 2-hour exam with 90 selected-response questions in Part A and 3 constructed-response short-answer essays in Part B. The test is based largely on National Council for the Social Studies standards and covers United States History, World History, Government/Civics/Political Science, Geography, Economics, and Behavioral Sciences.
The current ETS study companion weights the selected-response content as United States History at 18 questions, or 15%; World History at 18 questions, or 15%; Government/Civics/Political Science at 18 questions, or 15%; Economics at 13 questions, or 11%; Geography at 13 questions, or 11%; and Behavioral Sciences at 10 questions, or 8%. The three short essays are equally weighted, should take about 10 minutes each, and together comprise 25% of the score. Preparation should pair broad social studies content with interpreting passages, maps, charts, graphs, tables, cartoons, diagrams, photographs, and quotations in historical, geographic, political, and economic context.
Use selected-response drills for the 75% content portion and short timed writing for the 25% essay portion instead of treating the exam as one study mode.
Track U.S. history, world history, government and civics, economics, geography, and behavioral sciences so lower-weight areas do not disappear from review.
Practice three short essays in a row, giving about 10 minutes to each response, with a clear answer, evidence from the stimulus, and accurate social studies context.
Rotate passages, maps, charts, graphs, tables, cartoons, diagrams, photographs, and quotations to build speed with unfamiliar source formats.
Use the guide to self-serve, or talk to a coordinator if you need help mapping timelines, official requirements, or troubleshooting day-of logistics.
