College Board's current CLEP American Literature page says the exam covers American literature from precolonial times to the present, including prose and poetry written in the United States, literary content and background, authors, interpretation of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose, and literary-critical terminology. The test contains approximately 100 questions to be answered in 90 minutes, with some unscored pretest questions. The published skill proportions are interpretation of poetry and prose excerpts at about 35-40%, knowledge of literary works at about 25-30%, critical terms and literary devices at about 15-20%, and historical/social settings and literary relations at about 15-20%. Period coverage is 15% precolonial, colonial, and early national; 20% romantic; 20% realism and naturalism; 20% modernist; and 25% contemporary. College Board lists an ACE credit-granting recommendation of 50 for 3 semester hours, while each institution sets its own credit policy. Remote CLEP exams use Proctortrack by Verificient with a human proctor and the same timing, content, format, and on-screen experience as a test center. Remote testing requires a Windows 10 or 11 PC, Chrome 100 or higher, ETS Online Test application, Proctortrack technical requirements, administrative rights, no Mac, Chromebook, tablet, or mobile-device primary computer, and a smartphone second camera for exams beginning July 1, 2025.
